What UK Business Management Training Might Not Teach You

When a UK employer sends an employee to business management training, it can be both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it means that the employer probably has a high regard for the employee in question. On the other, an employer may raise his expectations when the employee returns from a business management training course. Here are some tips for those who have attended business courses for management skills or leadership training.

Tip #1 - Earn Their Respect

Simply having a management position or completing a business management training program doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be respected. In fact, in many cases, the exact opposite is true. So, be sure that everyone you manage is treated fairly and equitably. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and help with any task. Avoid having an “ivory tower” mentality. This isolates you and alienates your employees.

Tip #2 - Don’t Micromanage

There’s no better way to destroy morale, stifle creativity and hobble innovation than to micromanage either people or projects. Remember what you learned in business training and realise that the tendency to micromanage is rooted in your lack of self-confidence and lack of trust in your employees. You must learn to delegate, even if it means an occasional failure either on your part or an employee’s.

Tip #3 - Recognise and Reward Achievement

There are high achievers in every company and they are critically important to the company’s success. If you’re lucky enough to have a “star” under your management, take the time to understand and cultivate him or her. Also, try to analyse what makes this employee a high achiever and how you can motivate others to emulate him or her. Finally, high achievers are sometimes quirky, so you need to be tolerant without seeming to favour him or her.

Tip #4 - Be Willing to Learn

If you’re recently promoted, recognise that you don’t know everything and communicate that without seeming weak. If you’re new to the company, take some time to understand how its culture differs from your previous employer’s. Recognise that you’ll need to adjust your behaviour and management style so that it’s more compatible with you new situation. Taking a business leadership training class is a great way to fast track this process.

Tip #5 - Understand the “Real” Corporate Hierarchy

Sure, you should study the company’s organisation chart, but also recognise that there are relationships and dependencies that have nothing to do with the company’s formal structure. There’s a huge difference between the public “chain of command” and the private reality of how things get done in a company. If you don’t respect this “informal hierarchy,” it will be very difficult to both manage and succeed, despite all the management development training courses you may have taken.

Finally, keep and open mind and remember that there’s not a business management training course in UK that can prepare you for the variety and complexity of a company’s true corporate culture and hierarchy.
